‘Couldn’t cope’… Alan Shearer admits 31-year-old Newcastle player really struggled on Saturday

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has released his Premier League team of the week, and unsurprisingly it includes zero Toon players.

Shearer‘s team comes on the back of Newcastle United’s 4-4 draw with Luton Town. It was a thrilling match for the neutrals, but one that was agonising for those inside St James’ Park.

The Magpies were well below par, which came as a real shock after playing so well away to Aston Villa just days earlier.

In the end, Eddie Howe‘s side had to come from two goals down to rescue a point, but it was all three they were looking for.

However, Luton did a great job of nullifying Newcastle, while they had Chiedozie Ogbene flying down the wing. He ensured that Dan Burn had a torrid afternoon, and the Hatters’ number seven has been included in Shearer’s team of the week.

Alan Shearer says Dan Burn ‘couldn’t cope’ against Luton

Shearer named Ogbene in his team of the week for the Premier League’s official website, praising him for causing Burn so many problems.

“Dan Burn just couldn’t cope with the wing-back’s speed down Luton’s right flank,” he wrote.

Shearer also included Ross Barkley in his side. Like Ogbene, he was also outstanding on Saturday.

Horrible afternoon for Newcastle defender

It was tough to watch Burn up against Ogbene. The 31-year-old could not handle the speedy winger, who went beyond Burn time and time again. It was relentless, and eventually led to Burn conceding a penalty.

Soon after, Toon fans were calling for Tino Livramento to come on. They eventually got their wish, but supporters will wonder why it did not happen sooner.

Eddie Howe insisted that he kept Burn on for so long due to his height when defending set pieces, which is fair given how strong and physical Luton are. But his presence hindered us in other ways, and he should have been replaced by Livramento much sooner.

He could not cope, but he is not the first defender to struggle against Ogbene this season. His speed is scary.
