Eddie Howe has opened up on his decision to play Dan Burn in Newcastle United’s draw against Luton after he came under heavy criticism for his performance.
Burn has been a stalwart in Newcastle’s defence over the last two years, but supporters are starting to question whether he is still the best option at left-back.
When asked in an interview after the game why Burn was starting, Howe reiterated how important the 31-year-old still is to the team and explained that Tino Livramento will get his chance in time.
Howe says Burn has been ‘magnificent’ for Newcastle
Coming off the back of two great performances against Aston Villa and Fulham, Burn looked to be back to his best form which we haven’t really seen since last season when they qualified for the Champions League.
His weaknesses have always been obvious, but it feels like they’re getting exploited more and more this season as teams continue to target that left side of Newcastle’s defence.
In the games that he’s played, Livramento has more than proved that he’s capable of playing in that position and has actually had some man of the match performances from the left.
But Howe remained firm in his decision to start Burn and claimed that the former Brighton man still offers the team so much both defensively and going forwards, and that Livramento just has to be patient.
In the interview, Howe said: “Dan has been absolutely outstanding since he arrived at the football club. He played a huge part in our brilliant season last year, and our excellent defensive record. Four days ago, I thought he was magnificent against Aston Villa.
“He was a big part of why we played so well. Tino is an outstanding player, and no doubt will have a huge bearing on our future. But as I said earlier, there’s more than one aspect of the game to think about when I pick the team.”

Newcastle need to find a new left-back in the summer
Until the end of the season, the debate between Burn and Livramento will no doubt continue, but ultimately Newcastle need to find a new left-back in the summer if they are going to reach that next level.
Yes, Livramento can play in that position and do so very well, but you would like to think that his future lies at right-back when Kieran Trippier eventually leaves or retires, so another body is going to be needed regardless.
Right now, Newcastle feel very restricted in what they can do because of Burn’s pace and his lack of attacking output, and that needs to be a big focus in their summer recruitment.
It’s easier said than done and they will no doubt be looking to improve in a number of psoitions, but you feel like that should be a priority.
