Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has a lot of sympathy for one of Newcastle United’s most senior players.

The Magpies drew 4-4 with Luton Town on Saturday afternoon, with Rob Edwards’ side stunning St James’ Park with a blistering performance.

One of Luton’s best players was Chiedozie Ogbene, who made sure that Dan Burn endured a torrid afternoon.

The 26-year-old constantly ran at the Newcastle left-back, roaring past him time and time again with his relentless speed. Burn was completely helpless, like so many other Premier League defenders have been this season.

In the end, Burn actually conceded a penalty in his attempts to stop Ogbene, while he was eventually withdrawn in the 64th minute.

It was a dismal display from the £13million man, and now Jamie Carragher has explained why he feels sorry for the Toon defender.

Jamie Carragher has sympathy for Dan Burn

Carragher has been discussing Ogbene’s pace on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, which led to him analysing the duel between Luton’s number seven and Dan Burn.

“The reason I’m laughing is I’ve been there,” he said.

“The way Dan Burn feels at the moment having to chase this fella at the weekend is how I used to feel chasing Thierry Henry.”

Really difficult afternoon for Newcastle left-back

Burn was in a horrible situation. Ogbene was just too quick. There is no shame in that – the Republic of Ireland international is actually the second fastest player in the entire Premier League this season.

Alan Shearer was quick to make a joke about Burn’s struggles on Saturday, but there were not many supporters laughing inside St James’ Park.

They wanted to see Tino Livramento, who would have been better equipped to handle Ogbene. But Eddie Howe stuck with Burn, believing that his height was vital for defending set pieces against such a physical side.

It was a decision that backfired for Howe, while it will now be up to Burn to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointment.

Whether or not Carragher’s words make him feel better remains to be seen, but the former England international knows how helpless Burn feels right now having been rinsed by Thierry Henry time and time again during his playing career.

And now we know how everyone feels playing against Alexander Isak!
