Dan Burn did not have a very good game against Luton Town on Saturday, and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer made sure he knew about it.
The 31-year-old was given the runaround by Luton winger Chiedozie Ogbene, and eventually fouled him in the box to concede a penalty in the second half.
It was a miserable afternoon for Dan Burn, who quickly had to turn his attention elsewhere after the 4-4 draw at St James’ Park.
That night Burn attended the Alan Shearer Foundation ball, and was given a quick dressing down by the man of the hour.
It was reported by George Caulkin on Saturday night that Shearer said ‘shame he didn’t turn up at 3pm’ when Burn arrived at the event. It was just a joke from Newcastle’s all-time leading scorer, and he has now shared how the Magpies’ number 33 reacted.
How Dan Burn reacted to Alan Shearer’s joke on Saturday night
Shearer has been speaking about his event on Saturday night on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, and was asked by Gary Lineker about the comment he directed towards Burn.
“I heard you made a slightly cheeky comment about Dan Burn, did you?” Lineker asked.
Shearer replied: “I did. I couldn’t resist it. I said it was nice of Dan Burn to turn up tonight, more than he did at 3 o’clock this afternoon. I did say that we had all had them! And he stuck his hand up and said ‘yeah’. He took it in the right way.”

Dan Burn will bounce back for Newcastle
It was a light-hearted joke from Shearer, and it is good to see that Burn took it in the way that it was intended.
He struggled on Saturday against Luton, and he will know that he was nowhere near his best. It was such a shame to see him endure a difficult afternoon after a couple of really strong performances against Fulham and Aston Villa.
But Burn’s display on Saturday will only increase calls for Tino Livramento start. He thrived at left-back earlier this season, and fans are eager to see him play in that position again.
As for Burn, he is a professional. He will bounce back from this disappointment. He was not the only Newcastle player that underperformed against Luton, and now the Magpies desperately need a response away to Nottingham Forest.
