Brighton rub salt into Newcastle United’s wounds with social media message

Newcastle United bowed out of the FA Cup on Sunday following extra-time heartbreak against Brighton.

The result was one thing, but Newcastle United will feel the implications of what happened in the defeat for the next month.

Anthony Gordon was sent off for Newcastle in a moment of madness during the game, the winger will now miss this month’s Carabao Cup final as a result of his actions. Toon boss Eddie Howe was quick to defend Gordon in his post-match interview, but fans were less than pleased with what he had to say.

Newcastle fans were also shocked to hear that Lewis Hall, who has been sensational this season, missed out with an ankle problem. The left-back now faces a battle for fitness ahead of the cup final but early signs suggest he may not be available.

Out of everything, what may have stung the most was Yankuba Minteh scoring at the Gallowgate End, something fans would have loved to see him do as a Newcastle player. Minteh was forced to leave Newcastle for Brighton due to PSR concerns.

Despite that, Brighton has changed the narrative on a recent social media post, throwing a subtle dig towards the Magpies.

Brighton social media post on Yankuba Minteh gesture

Minteh’s goal was assisted by Joao Pedro, who Newcastle were set to sign in 2022 before the deal collapsed after the Magpies signed Alexander Isak for a club-record fee.

Pedro wanted to join Newcastle but has since found a new home on the South Coast. Minteh didn’t celebrate the goal, paying respect to the club that brought him to England and allowed him to shine in Holland, where he won the Dutch Cup.

Brighton posted a video of Minteh’s goal and celebration to TikTok, with the on-screen captions reading: “Respect from Yankuba Minteh for Newcastle. He joined them in 2023 but never got his chance to play.

“So he proved himself at Feyenoord and joined Albion this summer.

“He scored for us on his return to St James’ Park but refused to celebrate.”

While the message itself is about how Minteh refused to celebrate against his old team, it paints Newcastle out to have being willing to let him leave and refusing to give him game time. In reality, Minteh was loaned out for his first season at the club as that is part of the strategy for young players at Newcastle.

Paul Mitchell will loan out Antonio Cordero once he signs for Newcastle in the summer, exactly like what they did for Minteh. Howe didn’t want to sell Minteh, it is highly likely that he would’ve been a regular first-team starter for the Magpies this season, especially after Miguel Almiron was sold to Atlanta United in January.

Newcastle must not repeat Yankuba Minteh mistake

The last three transfer windows have been tough to endure for Newcastle fans, who have seen several players leave with barely any arrivals.

Elliot Anderson left Newcastle alongside Minteh last summer, the pair are now performing well at their new clubs.

With Cordero’s Newcastle deal almost complete, Newcastle must do everything in their power to avoid a repeat of the summer transfer window which saw them forced to sell their young players to turn a profit.

Mitchell recently welcomed Kyle Fitzgerald to Newcastle, the Irishman has performed well for Newcastle’s academy since joining. Even he had interest from several clubs, including Brighton and Wolves before joining the Magpies.

There is no doubt that there will be eyes on Newcastle’s young players in the summer, it’s down to Mitchell to fend off any interest in them.
