Danny Welbeck reminded Newcastle United fans of his past after dumping Eddie Howe’s side out of the FA Cup.
He netted a winner in extra time, as Brighton beat Newcastle 2-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
It was an outstanding finish from Danny Welbeck, who has now scored two winners at St James’ Park this season. This one meant more, as the Seagulls kept their trophy dreams alive.
As for Newcastle United, they are reliant on the Carabao Cup final to end their trophy drought. That game against Liverpool at Wembley is suddenly so much more difficult with Anthony Gordon suspended.

Yankuba Minteh’s show of respect to Newcastle United fans
After the game, Welbeck told the Brighton media team that he is a ‘Mackem at heart’ after spending a year on loan at Sunderland when he was a youngster.
The veteran was keen to rub it in after his dramatic winner, but one of his Brighton teammates had shown Newcastle United fans a strange sign of respect earlier in the afternoon.
Yankuba Minteh had a dramatic afternoon on his first ever appearance at St James’ Park.
It started badly for him, as he fouled Tino Livramento in the box to give Newcastle United a penalty that Alexander Isak converted.
Minteh responded before half-time, scoring at the Gallowgate end via a deflection off of Kieran Trippier to make it 1-1.
The 20-year-old showcased his speed and positional intelligence to draw Brighton level, at a time when Newcastle United are desperate for a new right winger.
After scoring, there would have been no complaints had Minteh celebrated wildly. After all, he never got a chance at Newcastle and was sold without even kicking a ball.
Instead, Minteh actually made a point of not celebrating. It was a show of respect from the Gambia international – albeit a needless one.
What Yankuba Minteh said about Newcastle United after leaving
Newcastle needed to cash in on Minteh, as they attempted to comply with PSR.
They did exactly that, largely down to Minteh’s £33million move to Brighton. It was frustrating, but also represented good business.
It was also a good move for Minteh, who got an immediate chance to prove he is Premier League quality. He has certainly done that, with the youngster boasting six goals and four assists in all competitions so far this season.
Upon his arrival at Brighton, Minteh told their official website: “I think it’s a great thing to move to [another] Premier League club. Although I didn’t play any games for Newcastle look where I am now! I have the chance at Brighton in the Premier League.”
