‘Horrendous’… Newcastle United fans livid at what Eddie Howe has come out and said about Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card in Newcastle United’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

The winger got caught up in a moment of madness that quite frankly shouldn’t have happened.

Referee Anthony Taylor stopped the game after Alexander Isak was judged to be in an offside position. However, that didn’t stop Anthony Gordon from pushing Jan Paul van Hecke in the back of the head, forcing Taylor to brandish the red card.

Consequentially, Gordon will miss the Carabao Cup final later this month. The 24-year-old was ineligible for the 2023 final having played in the earlier rounds for Everton before moving to Tyneside in January 2023.

Newcastle United will appeal Gordon’s red card, but the feeling is that the Magpies may not get the result they want from the FA. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher said Gordon’s red card was ‘unwise‘ given the circumstances – Newcastle could miss out on European football because of it.

Eddie Howe is keen to keep spirits high ahead of the final, but Newcastle fans have not taken kindly to recent comments regarding the England international, taking to social media to voice their opinions.

Newcastle fans react to Eddie Howe’s Anthony Gordon plea

Newcastle’s defeat to Brighton was just one of several low points throughout the day. With injury concerns mounting and a former Sunderland player scoring the winner at St James’ Park.

In his post-match interview, Howe said that they must support Gordon after his sending-off and seemed to brush off the impact of the incident at the time.

Fans were understandably still shaken by the red card, and frustrated by Howe’s choice of words, taking to X to voice their displeasure.

“‘We’ll need to support Anthony’ for what? being an idiot? Just let the entire fanbase and the 30,000 people going to Wembley down. Absolutely horrendous.” said one fan, while another added: “The usual verbal rubbish… Gordon is a grown man and it’s because of his actions. Needs support.”

This fan questioned Howe’s ability to criticise players, saying: “Way too soft on Gordon, it has given us an even bigger mountain to climb in two weeks, call a spade a spade.”

“Can’t stand these press conferences, so disingenuous. Never says it how it is. The team played poorly and Anthony Gordon made a horrible decision,” said this livid Newcastle fan.

Another fan added: “Gordon let himself down & us fans down today & that performance especially in the 2nd half was awful but hopefully Eddie Howe can turn their form around again though.”

Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “Same old same old from Eddie, we were just not good enough and Gordon acting like a petulant child.”

Newcastle fans must remember what Howe has achieved

Amongst those comments were a slew of fans calling for Howe to go. This season hasn’t been the most memorable for Newcastle but fans need to remember what he has done for the club since joining in 2021. Newcastle looked down and out in the 2021/22 season while Steve Bruce was in charge. Howe came in and completely transformed the existing squad and guided them to an 11th-place finish.

Howe took Newcastle back to the Champions League and a cup final the season after and gave a great account of himself in Europe’s top competitions with a slew of injuries within the first-team squad. Even with those injuries, Newcastle managed to finish seventh and only just missed out on European football on the technicality that Manchester United won the FA Cup.

At the tail end of this season, Newcastle still have a great chance of qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Carabao Cup. Even without Gordon, Newcastle still have players who can come in and get the job done.

Howe is right to defend his players, no matter how ridiculous the decision was. With a chance at Newcastle’s first trophy since 1969, fans must also do the same.
