Newcastle United will be seeking revenge when they face Brentford in the Carabao Cup.

Just 10 days ago, Newcastle United put on a very underwhelming performance in London and lost 4-2 to Brentford.

Eddie Howe questioned Newcastle’s attitude after the defeat while Alan Shearer criticised the “laughable” defending.

The two top-flight sides are now set to meet again when Brentford travel to St James’ Park for Wednesday evening’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash.

With a spot in the final four up for grabs, Newcastle will want revenge against Brentford and the Magpies should be high on confidence after thumping Leicester City 4-0.

Brentford single out Bruno Guimaraes ahead of cup clash

Bruno Guimaraes played the full 90 minutes of the 4-2 defeat to Brentford and Newcastle’s captain will be expected to start at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Guimaraes scored his first goal of the season in the victory over Leicester and has been on a good run of form after moving to a free-roaming No.8 position.

In their preview of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie, Brentford singled out Guimaraes as a threat.

Via their club website, they wrote: “Bruno Guimaraes made it 2-0 for the Magpies against Leicester with his first of the season. His previous league goal came at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, against the Bees, of course.

“The Brazilian is always a threat and Brentford will need to deal with him as they did earlier in the month. Guimaraes remains the most fouled player in Europe’s top five big leagues (having been on the end of 58 fouls).

“Guimaraes is also vital to Newcastle’s creativity, having made 102 progressive passes so far in the league (ranking him fifth) and only three players in the division have made more through balls than the playmaker (10)”.

Eddie Howe faces midfield dilemma vs Brentford

Howe has had good success recently with a midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Guimaraes, but with games coming thick and fast in December rotation is necessary.

In his pre-match press conference, Howe confirmed Lewis Miley will feature against Brentford after recovering from injury.

However, Newcastle will be without Sean Longstaff due to suspension. Joelinton will be available and will likely start with the Brazilian then suspended for the trip to Ipswich Town in the Premier League.

Joe Willock could also feature after coming off the bench in the win against Leicester.
