Newcastle United are gearing up to face Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe is looking to capitalise on Newcastle’s 4-0 win against Leicester on Saturday by reaching a second League Cup semi-final in three seasons.

Newcastle face Brentford on Wednesday night at St James’ Park for a place in the last four of the Carabao Cup.

Eddie Howe’s side came agonisingly close to winning Newcastle’s first silverware since 1969 when they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Wembley in 2023.

Last season, Newcastle were knocked out by Chelsea on penalties at Stamford Bridge which denied them a second successive semi-final appearance.

On Tuesday, Toon boss Howe faced the press ahead of the game against Brentford where he gave fans a small teaser of what to expect.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe confirms Lewis Miley will feature against Brentford

Young midfielder Lewis Miley featured in Newcastle under-21s 3-2 win against Chelsea under-21s on Monday night. He played alongside Sven Botman as he worked on his recovery from an ACL injury in March.

The 18-year-old only played 45 minutes, but Howe confirmed whilst speaking in his press conference, which was aired on Newcastle’s website, that it was a tactical decision.

“Lewis is an outstanding young player,” he said during his pre-match press conference.

“He’s had a difficult time with injuries so we’ve had to nurse him back and I thought the right path was for him to play games.

“He played last night albeit for a short period as he will be involved with us tomorrow. Getting his rhythm back is a really underrated thing.

“Players can rush that final part so when Lewis now plays in the first-team he will be at a really good level because of that.”

Howe also confirmed that Miley would stay at the club after the January transfer window, completely ruling out a loan move. The 47-year-old referred to him as “too important to us”.

Newcastle United are without Sean Longstaff for Brentford clash

Toon midfielder Sean Longstaff will miss the Brentford game after picking up bookings in the Carabao Cup wins against AFC Wimbledon and Chelsea.

Longstaff could leave Newcastle in January with the Magpies reportedly open to selling him. Longstaff would generate pure profit due to his academy links as PSR continues to be a lingering problem.

Despite receiving a Premier League ban, Joelinton is still in contention to play on Wednesday due to FA rulings over cards. He will miss Saturday’s trip to Ipswich however.

Joe Willock also has the chance to be involved after returning to Newcastle’s first-team squad on Saturday.
