England take on Brazil in a friendly on Saturday night, where Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon could make his international debut.
The 23-year-old has been named in the England squad for the first time in his career, and it is a call up that is richly deserved given how good he has been for Newcastle United. He has arguably been the Magpies’ best player this season.
It is really exciting to see Anthony Gordon receive international recognition, but it nearly did not happen due to a knee injury. However, the issue he sustained during the defeat to Chelsea did not prove to be serious, and it led to him getting the call from the FA.
He has now spoke about the moment he found out he was in the squad, and shared which Newcastle United teammate he told immediately after.
Anthony Gordon told Newcastle teammate Kieran Trippier about England call
Gordon has spoke to the Athletic about his England call up, admitting that the first person he spoke to about it was Kieran Trippier.
“Trips was next to me when I got the text,” he said.
“He was the perfect person to be next to me and you had to show him. He was buzzing for me.”

Trippier the ‘perfect’ Newcastle player to tell
Gordon and Trippier have struck up a real friendship since the former signed for Newcastle United in January 2023. Trippier has helped the winger settle in, and was unsurprisingly buzzing to hear that his pal had been included in the England squad.
The 33-year-old had been calling on Gareth Southgate to include Gordon in the squad, having admitted that he would pick the Newcastle number 10 if he was the England manager.
Southgate has taken Trippier’s advice on board, and Gordon is now in the squad for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. He is one of nine Newcastle players who are currently away on international duty.
Kieran Trippier not joining Anthony Gordon on England duty
However, Trippier is not on international duty right now. That is because the right-back is currently out of action with a calf problem, having missed Newcastle’s defeats to Chelsea and Manchester City.
He was not deemed fit enough for the England squad, but it is hoped that he will be available for the Magpies’ next game, which is at home to West Ham on March 30th.
