Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at St James’ Park after arriving from Stuttgart.

Eddie Howe needed to find a new goalscoring hero for Newcastle United over the summer.

Alexander Isak forced his way out of St James’ Park while Callum Wilson departed on a free transfer.

Yoane Wissa joined Newcastle on transfer deadline day, but only after Nick Woltemade completed a big-money move from Stuttgart.

Anthony Gordon shares similarities between Harry Kane and Newcastle United’s Nick Woltemade

The idea was for Wissa to provide proven Premier League quality and Woltemade to arrive as an exciting import for the future.

Wissa’s injury problems have delayed his debut, but Woltemade has stepped up to lead the line brilliantly.

Woltemade has now matched Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand by scoring in each of his first three home Premier League games at Newcastle.

The German is making an immediate impact and has now earned praise from Magpies winger Anthony Gordon.

Speaking to Hayters while on international duty with England, Gordon was asked about similarities between Woltemade and Three Lions star Harry Kane.

Woltemade and Kane both love to come deep and get on the ball, with Gordon noting that the pair have a ‘very similar style of play’.

Gordon suggested that Woltemade and Kane want to be the ‘quarterback’ of the team and don’t play like the traditional penalty box striker.

The Magpies winger loves playing with that kind of striker, believing that it helps his own game by creating space to run into beyond defenders.

“I think they do play a very similar style of football in terms of they want to almost be the quarterback,” said Gordon.

“They want to come in and create. They don’t just want to finish the chances like a typical striker would do. The amount of assists Harry’s got in in the past couple of years and over his career is outstanding. So, for me personally, I think it helps me because my style sort of suits playing with that style of striker because I can run off them.

“If defenders want to go and engage with them, I can run off the back. So, I think it’s really positive for me and I really enjoy it,” he added.

Woltemade didn’t actually have all that much top-level experience under his belt upon joining Newcastle.

A tough transition period to the Premier League would have been understandable, but he has been outstanding so far.

Gordon added that he thinks Woltemade has performed ‘extremely well’ for Newcastle and hopes to see his strong form continue.

Woltemade scored a fantastic penalty against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, and Gordon also joked that he would have stepped up instead of Woltemade had he still been on the pitch.

“Yeah, I was a bit gutted to come off the pitch because then I couldn’t take it,” joked Gordon.

“He’s done extremely well. It was a big moment for him and he’s in great form, so long may it continue,” he added.

Woltemade has been called up by Germany, but an illness could keep him out against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland in the coming days.
