Alan Shearer was wowed by one of Newcastle United’s top transfer targets this week.

After a hugely successful December, Newcastle United carried their form into the New Year and started 2025 with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham.

The Magpies have now won seven consecutive games, as they followed up their win over Tottenham Hotspur with victory in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

Back to the Premier League, and there were several standout players from the win over Tottenham. Eddie Howe was impressed by Dan Burn and Sven Botman.

Alan Shearer also praised Jacob Murphy after another impressive display from the 29-year-old against Spurs.

However, Murphy – or any Newcastle player for that fact – didn’t make the cut in Shearer’s latest Premier League Team of the Week.

Despite Newcastle closing the gap to the top four and beating yet another ‘Big Six’ side, Shearer could not find any space for Toon stars in his Gameweek 20 Team of the Week.

Former Newcastle ace Elliot Anderson was praised by Shearer last week and the now-Nottingham Forest star featured in the XI ahead of the likes of Murphy, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

Alexander Isak scored in a seventh consecutive match with his winner against Spurs, but he was pipped by Erling Haaland in Shearer’s side.

Shearer did, however, find space for Newcastle target Bryan Mbeumo after he scored twice in Brentford’s 5-0 win over Southampton.

Via Premier League News, Shearer wrote: “Two more goals, plus an assist. He’s in red-hot form.”

As recently as November, Shearer said Mbeumo is the best player in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Will Newcastle United sign Bryan Mbeumo this month?

It is an open secret that Newcastle want to sign a right winger this month after missing out on several targets in the summer.

Mbeumo is Newcastle’s “dream” signing, but luring him away from Brentford midway through the season would be a big challenge.

After his superb start to the season, Brentford value Mbeumo at £50m which is within Newcastle’s budget but would require sales this month to avoid a points deduction under PSR.

Brentford will only part ways with Mbeumo if a “substantial offer” arrives this month. It is down to Paul Mitchell to make that happen.
