Alan Shearer says Newcastle’s ‘dream’ January signing is the best player in the Premier League bottom half

Newcastle United’s dream January signing would get the seal of approval from Alan Shearer.

The Magpies are currently weighing up what to do when the January transfer window opens, with Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell collaborating on Newcastle’s plans.

It has been reported that Newcastle’s January priority is to sign a winger, while it could be argued that a centre-back is more pressing. That is why Newcastle are targeting Marc Guehi again.

There are a lot of spinning plates at St James’ Park, while there will likely be duelling opinions behind the scenes.

Newcastle United want Bryan Mbeumo

Newcastle’s defeat to West Ham proved they still need a right winger.

Joelinton was nowhere near as impactful against a team using a low block, while Jacob Murphy endured a pretty miserable cameo off the bench.

That game highlighted the need for reinforcements, with Bryan Mbeumo considered Newcastle’s ‘dream’ signing.

What Alan Shearer has said about Bryan Mbeumo

He would be an outstanding addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer would certainly welcome a deal for Mbeumo, as he has just named the Brentford attacker as the best player in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Shearer was asked who deserves that title on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast.

He gave a definitive one-word answer, saying: “Mbeumo.”

Micah Richards disagreed, but named another Newcastle United target in Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.

“I’m going to go with Semenyo,” he said.

“Yeah, really enjoy him. He’s had a really good start to the season.”

Newcastle risk paying Premier League tax

If Newcastle were to sign either Mbeumo or Semenyo, there would be delight on Tyneside.

Both players are enjoying fabulous seasons, and are proving that they can play at an even higher level.

Newcastle are aiming to play at a higher level too, and would want a player like Mbeumo or Semenyo to be part of the long-term project at St James’ Park.

However, a deal for either player would be extremely difficult in January. There is always a ‘Premier League tax’ when it comes to domestic players, while it would be inflated even higher midway through the season.

While Newcastle are targeting bottom half Premier League players who look ready to take a step up, they might prove to be too expensive.
