Newcastle United suddenly look like they can finish in the top six again, and that is largely down to two players according to Alan Shearer.

The Magpies beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 on Saturday, winning at St James’ Park for the first time in 2024.

It was an afternoon where pretty much everything went right for Newcastle United. The only concern coming out of the game is an injury to Kieran Trippier, after he was forced off.

But there was a lot more to be positive about for Eddie Howe. His tactical switch made a big difference, while Joe Willock was exceptional on his first Premier League start since November.

However, his performance did not earn him a a place in Alan Shearer‘s team of the week, which included two Toon players after the win over Wolves.

Two Newcastle players in Alan Shearer’s team of the week

Following the conclusion of this weekend’s fixtures, Alan Shearer has announced his team of the week for the Premier League’s official website. It includes two Newcastle players, with Fabian Schar and Bruno Guimaraes standing out in black and white.

On Schar, Shearer wrote: “Sturdy at the back and really played his part in Newcastle’s forward play.”

On Bruno, he added: “Instrumental in everything good for Newcastle.”

They were pivotal for Newcastle against Wolves

Schar and Bruno were outstanding on Saturday.

Starting with Schar, it was a real return to form for a man who had briefly looked out of sorts. A flurry of goals had glazed over some dubious defensive displays, but he was excellent in attack and defence at the weekend.

He contributed to Newcastle’s first Premier League clean sheet since December, while he was also crucial in the Magpies scoring three goals. He was involved in every goal, showcasing his sublime passing ability and launching attacks from deep.

As for Bruno, he was also brilliant. It was his gut-busting run that helped Newcastle take the lead, just days after he was criticised for a lack of athleticism.

But what he lacks in athleticism, he makes up for with flair. Everyone has been talking about his majestic no-look pass, which almost resulted in Miguel Almiron finding the net.

It was a complete display from the Brazilian, and he was once again at the heart of everything good about Newcastle United on Saturday as Shearer says.
