The Newcastle United team would look very different if it was not for PSR.
The Premier League’s financial rules have hindered Newcastle United, limiting their capacity to spend while forcing them to sell players they would prefer to keep.
It has been infuriating for the Magpies, and that infuriation is not going to disappear in the immediate future. The Premier League have decided to keep PSR for now, much to the frustration of Newcastle United supporters.
While there are no fears of a PSR breach in 2025, it was a very different story in 2024. Newcastle scrambled to raise funds before June 30th, which resulted in Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh being sold.

‘You can see why’ Newcastle United did not want to sell Yankuba Minteh
Both deals were met with regret, and that regret has continued the more they thrive at their new clubs. Elliot Anderson is doing very well for Nottingham Forest, while Yankuba Minteh recently scored a brace in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Chelsea.
That performance earned Minteh a place in Troy Deeney’s Premier League team of the week for BBC Sport, with the former Watford striker admitting that ‘you can see why’ Newcastle were reluctant to let the winger go.
“He got two goals, was excellent, and was a thorn in the side of Chelsea all day,” he said.
“Newcastle obviously didn’t want to get rid of him and you can see why.
“His potential with his pace and power is frightening.”
How Yankuba Minteh compares to Newcastle United’s wingers this season
Every time Minteh does something positive for Brighton, there are Toon fans bemoaning his £33million exit from St James’ Park.
That is understandable, but the Gambian attacker’s departure ensured that megastars like Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon remained at the club. If that was the price we had to pay to retain them then fair enough.
Minteh would have stayed at Newcastle in a perfect world, but making such a huge profit on him without playing a single minute was great business. 12 months after Dan Ashworth brought him in for around £6million, he was becoming one of Newcastle’s biggest sales ever.
And when you compare Minteh’s numbers in the Premier League to Newcastle’s current wingers, there is nothing to suggest that cashing in was a major blunder.
| PL appearances | Goals | Assists | |
| Anthony Gordon | 24 | 6 | 5 |
| Jacob Murphy | 22 | 4 | 7 |
| Harvey Barnes | 20 | 5 | 1 |
| Yankuba Minteh | 20 | 5 | 2 |
While the counterargument is that Minteh is only 20-years-old and has a lot of potential, the reality is that Jacob Murphy is performing at a much more consistent level on the right.
Ideally, Newcastle would have kept Minteh, but PSR meant he had to go. That was incredibly frustrating, as Minteh plays in a position that the Magpies are lacking depth.
That will be addressed in the summer, with Newcastle set to target a winger.
Whoever arrives will hopefully surpass Minteh, and bring an end to discourse surrounding his Toon departure.
