£40m Newcastle player says he’ll do ‘everything’ to start vs Man City on Saturday

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is refusing to rule himself out of Saturday’s FA Cup quarter final against Manchester City.

The 23-year-old has been a major doubt for the game all week, having sustained a knee injury during the Monday night defeat to Chelsea. There were even fears that it was a serious injury that could rule him out for a long time.

However, that has not proven to be the case, much to the delight of Anthony Gordon. It could result in him featuring against Manchester City, while it has also seen him win his first ever England call up.

The winger is in Gareth Southgate’s squad for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, which suggests that the knee issue is nothing to worry about.

And that is the view of Gordon, who has admitted that he will do everything in his power to be involved against Man City before heading out on international duty.

Anthony Gordon is desperate to be involved against Man City

Following his inclusion in the England squad, Gordon spoke to NUFC TV. He delivered an injury update ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Man City.

“I’ve always said if I’m not injured I won’t miss games,” he said.

“I was really fortunate there was not much up with my knee. Just a bit of pain. I was really lucky.

“I can’t then just miss a game because of a sore knee, that’s not what I’m about. If I can play, I’ll play. So from now until the game I’ll do everything I can to be in that position.”

Huge boost for Newcastle if Gordon is available

It is going to be an incredibly difficult game for Newcastle, and one they are predicted to lose.

But Pep Guardiola is set to be without Kevin De Bruyne, while the Magpies could have some positive injury news.

It would be a real boost if Gordon is able to play, especially given how good he was against Man City back in January. The £40million man scored that day, as Newcastle lost 3-2.

Eddie Howe will be hoping for a different result on Saturday, and he will fancy his chances much more if Gordon is fit enough to be involved. In a perfect world, he starts against last season’s treble winners and excels before heading off with England.

But even if Gordon is fit, it is going to be a tough game for Newcastle. They have only ever won once at the Etihad Stadium, and that was back in 2014.
