Newcastle United endured a miserable night against Chelsea on Monday, made worse by the injury Anthony Gordon suffered.
The Magpies were beaten 3-2 at Stamford Bridge, with a dismal performance resulting in zero points. It was exactly what Newcastle United deserved for such a rotten display.
It was such a disappointing evening, and it started with Harvey Barnes not being named on the bench. He missed out due to a hamstring injury, and now another Toon winger has picked up a problem.
Anthony Gordon was forced off during the first half against Chelsea, with Jacob Murphy replacing him in the 36th minute.
The 23-year-old had started on the left wing but did not look his usual self, failing to track back and protect Dan Burn. That contributed to Chelsea’s first goal of the game, which was scored by Nicolas Jackson.
Gordon then moved to the right flank, but a challenge from Marc Cucurella resulted in the Newcastle number 10 signalling to come off.
And now Eddie Howe has explained what is wrong with the winger.
Eddie Howe says Anthony Gordon suffered a knee injury
After the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea, Howe spoke to Sky Sports Main Event and provided an update on Anthony Gordon.
“I can’t really add too much to it other than it was a knee injury,” he said.
“Strange. There was no moment that he felt it. It was just there in the game.
“Anthony at half time – he was in quite a bit of pain. We don’t quite know how bad it is.”

Hopefully not another major injury for Newcastle United
It is such a blow to see Gordon suffer an injury, just like he did during the Carabao Cup game at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. Clearly it is not a stadium that he enjoys visiting…
Gordon is yet to miss any games due to injury this season. He has been so reliable for Howe, during a season where multiple Newcastle United players have succumbed to injury.
The former Everton man has only missed one match, and that was due to suspension. He has always been fit, and he has always been decisive.
He has been enjoying such a good season in black and white, and hopefully he is not now set for a spell on the sidelines.
It remains to be seen if he will miss any games, with Newcastle next in action on Saturday evening against Manchester City in the FA Cup.
