Newcastle United are preparing put things right against Southampton on Saturday.

The Magpies’ winning run came to an end last weekend, as Newcastle United lost to Bournemouth at St James’ Park.

Newcastle were completely outplayed, with Dan Burn refusing to use tiredness as an excuse.

Now Eddie Howe’s side must go again, as they travel to the south coast to face bottom of the league Southampton.

However, it remains to be seen if the Newcastle United squad will be any stronger for the trip to St Mary’s.

Harvey Barnes is still injured, having suffered a thigh problem in the FA Cup win over Bromley. Elsewhere, Callum Wilson is out of action too, with the striker aiming to return in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on February 5th.

Newcastle United are also without Nick Pope at the minute. The England international has missed the Magpies’ last 10 games due to a knee problem, with Martin Dubravka taking his place.

However, the 32-year-old has been nearing a return. Eddie Howe said last week that Pope would be close for Southampton, as he eyed a return to first-team training.

Alas, it remains to be seen if the £10million goalkeeper has returned to training. The club have released a photo gallery from Wednesday’s training session to their official website, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon taking part.

But there is no sign of Nick Pope.

That would suggest he is yet to return to first-team training. However, there will still be time for him to train before Southampton and possibly be involved. But at the moment his comeback remains up in the air.

Miguel Almiron still in Newcastle United training

While there is no Nick Pope in the training photos, there is an appearance from Miguel Almiron.

He is still working hard with his Toon teammates, despite nearing a departure.

Newcastle are set to sell Almiron this week, with the 30-year-old due to return to Atlanta United and play in the MLS.

Unless that deal is finalised in the next couple of days, he could still be part of the Newcastle squad that faces Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
