Martin Dubravka is suddenly under a lot of pressure at Newcastle United after Eddie Howe update

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is enjoying a remarkable run.

The Magpies have won nine games in a row, and Martin Dubravka has started all nine of those games.

With Nick Pope injured, the 36-year-old has been drafted in to keep net for Newcastle United, at a time when it looked like he would leave the club.

A move to Saudi Arabia appeared to beckon, with Al-Shabab confident about striking a deal. However, that confidence was misplaced, as it currently looks like Dubravka will stay at Newcastle.

Newcastle fans showed love to Dubravka during the FA Cup win over Bromley, and the Slovakian has repaid their faith with a string of sensational performances. During this nine-game winning run, Dubravka has only conceded three goals.

He is playing extremely well, but now there is pressure on him to keep performing.

What Eddie Howe has said about Nick Pope’s injury

That is because Eddie Howe has provided an update on Nick Pope’s fitness during his pre-match press conference.

Ahead of the Magpies’ game against Bournemouth, Howe was asked if there is any chance of Pope returning to the squad.

“I think tomorrow might be a little bit too early,” he said.

“But certainly he’s going to be close for next week. He’s not trained with us yet but he’s certainly building up to that moment. We’re happy with where he is at and, mentally, I think he’s getting there ready to play.”

Eddie Howe will suddenly need to make major Newcastle decision

With Pope almost fit to return after his knee injury, Eddie Howe will soon have a decision to make.

In the past, Pope has been nailed on as the Magpies’ number one. Throughout his time on Tyneside, he has been the first choice goalkeeper.

However, that is currently not the case. Newcastle are on a remarkable run, with Dubravka barely putting a foot wrong.

In truth, he has had a few quiet games, but he made some big saves against Wolves, while he has helped Newcastle’s build up from the back with his ability on the ball. That is one department where Dubravka trumps Pope.

But in terms of shot-stopping, commanding your box and being a sweeper keeper, it is Pope who comes out on top.

That is why Howe will have a difficult decision to make in the near future. In truth, he probably needs to stick with Dubravka. He is enjoying a really strong run of form, while Newcastle owe him one after effectively blocking his move to Saudi Arabia.

If Pope does come straight back in, talk of Dubravka departing in January will suddenly ramp up again. That is not what Howe wants, with the Newcastle United manager keen to retain Dubravka.

But with Pope almost ready to return, Dubravka is suddenly under a bit of pressure. Hopefully he rises to it and continues to excel.
