Newcastle United picked up an unlikely win on Tuesday night, and it came courtesy of a surprising source.
Fabian Schar was Newcastle United’s hero against Aston Villa, netting a first half brace to set the Magpies on their way to an emphatic victory. Eddie Howe’s side ran out 3-1 winners, with Schar’s two strikes followed by an Alex Moreno own goal. Ollie Watkins got one back for Villa, but it was too little too late for the home side.
Schar, who recently signed a new contract at St James’ Park, netted his first Premier League goals of the season at Villa Park, taking his tally in all competitions to three. His other goal was that infamous strike against Paris Saint-Germain, just in case you had forgot…
Schar’s two goals against Aston Villa were much less iconic, but they could have a huge impact on the rest of Newcastle’s season.
His first came from a Kieran Trippier corner. Some horrible Aston Villa defending allowed him to guide the ball into the bottom corner like a true striker. And his second was a poacher’s goal, following in after Anthony Gordon’s long range effort deflected down off the crossbar.
Schar was in the right place at the right time on two occasions at Villa Park, and was given the player of the match award by commentator Ally McCoist.
Ally McCoist hails Fabian Schar
During TNT Sports‘ coverage of Aston Villa vs Newcastle, Ally McCoist praised Schar for his performance as he declared him the player of the match.
He said: “Man of the match for me goes to two goal Schar, who I think has been terrific all round but when your centre-backs help your forwards out with a couple of goals it always helps!
“They have certainly had the better players on the park this evening, Newcastle. They have been deserving of the victory.”

Schar was Newcastle’s hero against Aston Villa
Schar became the first Newcastle player to score at Villa Park in the Premier League since Yoan Gouffran on Tuesday night. The Frenchman scored back in 2013, which tells you all you need to know about the Magpies’ record in the West Midlands!
The Switzerland international is best known for scoring screamers, but he was a penalty box poacher against Unai Emery’s side. But that does not matter – the most important thing is that his goals helped Newcastle pick up a vital three points.
This was a huge win for Eddie Howe, whose side have been rotten away from home this season. This was just their second win away from St James’ Park in the Premier League, and it came at a ground where Villa have been absolutely dominant.
But that was not the case on Tuesday, with Fabian Schar doing the business. He scored two goals that any striker would be proud of, on a night where our only fit forward picked up an injury…
