Newcastle United followed up their derby day delight with even more good news on Monday.

The club announced a new contract for Fabian Schar, with the defender extending his stay at St James’ Park until 2025.

His deal was due to expire at the end of the current season, but he will now be with us until the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign.

Schar had been hoping for a new contract, and now he has got his wish. After Schar, the next player who could be in line for an extension is Jamaal Lascelles, as his current deal expires in the summer.

It is fantastic to learn that Schar is staying put. The Switzerland international continues to shine in black and white, and has been one of our stronger performers during what has been an up and down season so far.

His best moment came in the Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain, where his incredible strike from distance put the gloss on an astounding 4-1 win on Tyneside.

The 32-year-old is a special player, and someone who has improved so much under Eddie Howe. The Toon boss has given Schar a new lease of life in the North East, having previously been out of favour when Steve Bruce was in charge.

But Schar is at the forefront now, and he is delighted to extend his stay with Newcastle United – and so are his teammates.

Newcastle players such as Nick Pope delighted for Fabian Schar

Following the announcement, Schar took to his official Instagram account to express his joy at signing a new deal and send a message to supporters.

He wrote: “Absolutely over the moon to have extended the contract!! Since joining Newcastle 5 1/2 years ago, i have enjoyed every single minute playing for this club! I am just very thankful for the opportunity i have here and will do my all for black and white till my last day!! I am looking forward for everything whats coming!!”

Schar received plenty of replies from his Toon teammates.

Sean Longstaff commented: “Love it handsome.”

Matt Targett and Emil Krafth both replied: “Well deserved bro.”

And the injured Nick Pope wrote: “3 million pound never looked so good.”

Fabian Schar was an absolute bargain

Pope is referring to the bargain fee Newcastle United bought Schar for back in 2018.

The Magpies activated a £3million release clause to bring him in from Deportivo La Coruna, making him a cheap addition to Rafa Benitez’s squad.

Given the fee, not too much was expected. But fast forward to 2024 and Schar is a key part of a squad that qualified for the Champions League and made it to the 2023 Carabao Cup final.

Schar has been involved in some of the club’s most memorable moments in recent years, and hopefully he can make more memories in black and white after signing a one-year contract extension.
