Newcastle United experienced a difficult night against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, as they dropped to third in their Champions League group.

Eddie Howe’s side were beaten 1-0 by Dortmund, with Felix Nmecha scoring the only goal of the game. Newcastle were not at their best, but did create plenty of chances and were unlucky not to grab an equaliser.

But Dortmund played brilliantly, and did a wonderful job at silencing the crowd. It was a night where it just did not go Newcastle’s way, starting with Alexander Isak’s early injury.

The Magpies later suffered another injury, with Jacob Murphy forced off just minutes after coming on with a shoulder problem. It looked a nasty one for the boyhood Toon fan.

With two injury problems and a disappointing Champions League defeat, there was not a lot for Newcastle to be buoyant about. However, Eddie Howe did manage to find one major positive from the 1-0 loss at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe delighted to have Joe Willock back

After the 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, Howe spoke to NUFC TV. He discussed how happy he was to have Joe Willock back from injury.

“It was great to see Joe back,” he said.

“He has got quality and I think it was good minutes for him tonight. That will do him the world of good.

“He’s a huge player.”

The one big positive from Newcastle’s defeat to Borussia Dortmund

While it was a tough night for Newcastle, it was excellent to see Joe Willock back in black and white shirt.

He returned to training last week, and his teammates have been expressing their delight at having the 24-year-old back in the fold.

It was a surprise to see him named on the bench for the game against Borussia Dortmund, and he was able to make his comeback in the 70th minute.

It was Willock’s first appearance since May, and he will have been buzzing to finally be back on the St James’ Park pitch.

The timing of his return is ideal, with Newcastle set to lose Sandro Tonali to a 10-month ban for betting.

It might take him a few weeks to get back up to speed, but the return of Joe Willock should give Newcastle a real boost as they head into November and beyond.
