Eddie Howe could not hide his disappointment when Alexander Isak suffered an injury during Newcastle United’s Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund.

The Magpies were beaten 1-0 by the Bundesliga giants, with former Toon target Felix Nmecha scoring the only goal of the game.

Newcastle did have plenty of chances of their own, and will feel disappointed that they were not able to get anything out of their third Champions League game of the campaign.

But small moments went against Howe’s side, whose game-plan had to be completely changed in the 15th minute.

Alexander Isak suffers injury vs Borussia Dortmund

Howe had made two changes to his starting XI for the Champions League clash with Dortmund. Alexander Isak and Miguel Almiron came into the side in place of Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy.

However, one of his returning players was quickly forced off.

After starting the game very brightly, Isak went down with an injury. He received treatment from the physios, but it quickly became clear that he would not be able to continue.

The 24-year-old had suffered a reoccurrence of the groin issue that troubled him during the international break, meaning Wilson had to be brought on off the bench.

It was a huge blow for Howe, who had stated before the game that he believed Isak was back to full fitness.

How Eddie Howe reacted to Newcastle injury blow

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe shook his head in disappointment as Isak was forced off in the 15th minute.

It is understandable why he was so disappointed, as Isak had been enjoying a really bright start to the game. He had already created a wonderful chance for the Magpies, playing Anthony Gordon through on goal as Newcastle tried to hit Dortmund on the counter.

While Wilson is a very talented player, he struggled to get into the game at times – although he did come narrowly close to scoring on two occasions.

Losing Isak was a massive blow on Wednesday night, and it certainly disrupted our flow. Howe clearly had a game-plan that leaned on Isak’s talents, but it was ripped up within 15 minutes.

Hopefully it is not a serious injury for the Sweden international, and we see him back in action soon.
