Why Newcastle are still concerned about their ‘remarkable’ player this summer

Newcastle United have made it to pre-season without losing any of their key players.

While that is hardly the most ambitious of statements, it’s perhaps not something Newcastle fans could have banked on earlier this summer.

Indeed, Bruno Guimaraes had a release clause worth around £100m in his contract running until late June, meaning the club had little hope of keeping him should an interested party stump up that money.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, reportedly had his head turned after desperate talks with Liverpool as Newcastle were looking to raise money in order to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

With Alexander Isak linked away at times too, the fact all three remain at St James’ Park is undoubtedly a positive.

Still, it may not be a long-term thing.

That’s because Guimaraes, hailed as “remarkable” by Kieran Trippier, is seemingly still attracting interest.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Newcastle are still somewhat concerned about Manchester City’s interest in the Brazilian international.

The report suggests City would be confident in tempting the 26-year-old to move to the Etihad Stadium were they to formalise their interest by way of an actual offer.

They claim that an offer from the Premier League champions still cannot be ruled even despite the fact they did not move when the release clause was active.

Bruno Guimaraes already has a preferred club to join if he leaves Newcastle

While Guimaraes has been vocal about wanting to stay at Newcastle, that doesn’t mean a move to City would not appeal.

They are, after all, arguably the best team in the world and it would be a major shock were they not to compete for the Premier League and Champions League titles next year.

Indeed, it was claimed last month that Pep Guardiola’s side were always the preferred destination Guimaraes had in mind were he to leave Newcastle.
