Newcastle United want to beat some of Europe’s biggest clubs to the signing of Kees Smit.

The Dutch midfielder has emerged as a Newcastle United target, with Ross Wilson getting set for his first transfer window in charge since being appointed as the club’s new sporting director.

He will hope to make an impression, and he will do just that if he is able to strike a deal for the 19-year-old wonderkid.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle United are admirers of Smit, who is also attracting attention from the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The biggest clubs in the world want to sign Smit, but it is Newcastle United who are hoping to win the race.

Kees Smit is ‘attainable’ for Newcastle United

Given the calibre of clubs competing for his signature, the thought of Smit arriving at St James’ Park is currently difficult to envisage.

However, a January 2026 deal is not being ruled out.

According to Newcastle World, Smit is seen as an ‘attainable’ January transfer target for the Magpies.

They report that Newcastle will look to sign the Dutchman, as they attempt to add another centre-midfielder to their squad in one of the next two transfer windows.

This comes after Newcastle bought Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa during the summer transfer window. He is yet to nail down a place in Eddie Howe’s starting XI, while there are doubts over Joe Willock’s long-term future at St James’ Park.

The former Arsenal player has a contract with the Magpies until 2027.

Kees Smit deal would cool Elliot Anderson return talk

When it comes to centre-midfielders, Elliot Anderson is Newcastle United’s dream signing.

However, bringing the local lad back to St James’ Park would be extremely expensive. It has been reported that Nottingham Forest want £100million for Anderson, which would smash the Magpies’ transfer record.

While he would be an outstanding addition to the Newcastle United squad, the same can be said for Smit. And when it comes to finances, he is available for a fraction of the price.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has claimed that AZ Alkmaar want at least £22million for Smit. That makes him much more affordable, which has to be taken into consideration in the era of PSR.

If Newcastle do formalise their interest and are able to strike a deal for Smit, it would likely lead to the Anderson return speculation cooling down.
