Newcastle United’s youth recruitment drive continues as they look to conclude a deal for Antonio Cordero.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell has applied his touch to Newcastle’s recruitment since joining in the summer.
Mitchell came to the club immediately after Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold to avoid a points deduction for the season. After assessing the club inside out, Mitchell branded Newcastle’s transfer strategy “not fit for purpose” and completely shifted the tone on how and who they recruit.
Newcastle now target youth from abroad in a move ordered by Mitchell – the Magpies now look set to sign Antonio Cordero from La Liga 2 side Malaga.
Mitchell entered pre-contract talks with Cordero and looks to have beaten the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid to his signature. Cordero will follow striker Vakhtang Salia through the door at St James’ Park.
With his transfer soon to be confirmed, Spanish media have given a brutally honest assessment of Cordero’s performance in a recent La Liga 2 game.

Spanish media on Antonio Cordero’s performance
Cordero will not be the first young player to join Newcastle since Mitchell’s arrival. Newcastle signed Kyle Fitzgerald in January after impressing on trial in October.
Elsewhere, 18-year-old midfielder Baran Yildiz arrived at Newcastle from Genclerbirligi a Turkish second division side.
Cordero played the first half in Malaga’s 1-1 draw with Levante. The former La Liga side are without a win and now sit 16th in the table, seven points off the relegation zone.
After the game, Spanish site LaOpinionDeMalaga were not at all impressed with Cordero’s performance.
They gave the 18-year-old a 4/10 rating for his efforts and said: “Unsuccessful. A little better, but still going unnoticed. He had more of the ball but without success.”
Despite the shaky performance against Levante, Cordero has still been impressive this season. The winger has scored four goals and bagged five assists for Malaga this season, more assists than any other player in his team.
Antonio Cordero’s chances of minutes at Newcastle
Cordero has clearly done enough to impress Mitchell and Toon boss Eddie Howe this season. Newcastle are in need of a winger, and Cordero could be the answer to Howe’s prayers.
As it stands, Jacob Murphy is the only out-and-out right-winger available in Newcastle’s first-team squad.
The belief is that Newcastle will loan their new youth players out for their first season at the club but Codero could be of use to Howe if he decides against signing a winger in the summer transfer window.
| Appearances (League) | Goals | Assists | |
| Antonio Cordero | 24 | 4 | 5 |
Newcastle need bodies in multiple positions after allowing the likes of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly to leave in the January transfer window – Cordero would be the cheaper option to solve Newcastle’s winger issues.
