Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has not had it easy in the opening few weeks of his tenure.
Indeed, Newcastle endured a summer transfer window so underwhelming it was publicly slammed by club legend Alan Shearer, with Eddie Howe’s squad not significantly strengthened.
Mitchell’s arrival is also said to have frustrated head of recruitment Steve Nickson, who may have been side-lined following the appointment of the new sporting director.
Recent reports suggest Mitchell is unhappy with how things are going at St James’ Park and the annoyance is not believed to be confined to him alone.
Reports from the Daily Telegraph suggest people who have been and continue to be involved at Newcastle have been upset at his recent comments.

How Paul Mitchell has upset people who have been involved at Newcastle
They suggest that Mitchell’s claims last week that the club’s previous transfer structure was not “fit for purpose” have not gone down particularly well.
Former sporting director Dan Ashworth is said to have been upset by the comments, as well as ex-director Amanda Staveley. Nickson is also said to be of a similar view.
Some of them have reportedly privately expressed frustration that their recruitment decisions were questioned, as they are proud of the players brought in since the takeover.
Paul Mitchell has been questioned publicly too
The comments made last week have also been scrutinised by pundits such as Simon Jordan, so they’ve certainly made a splash.
Speaking on talkSPORT last week, the former Crystal Palace owner criticised Mitchell for slating the set-up at Newcastle, suggesting he shouldn’t have joined if he was not happy with the working conditions.
Mitchell does of course have plenty of time to get things back on track on Tyneside but things are not exactly going particularly well right now.
It will be fascinating to see how it all develops from here…
