Jamie Redknapp ‘likes’ what Marc Guehi has done since Newcastle move collapsed

It remains to be seen just how much Newcastle United regret not signing Marc Guehi.

While advocating for Newcastle to splash club-record money does not feel particularly wise during a PSR world where the club only narrowly avoided a ten-point deduction in June, there is little doubt that not signing Guehi is a huge disappointment.

Eddie Howe was reportedly very keen on the Crystal Palace defender, only to see the move collapse during the closing stages of the window.

Perhaps Newcastle will go on to sign a defender who represents better value for money at some point but until that happens, missing out on Guehi will be a source of regret.

Arguably one of England’s standout players at Euro 2024, it feels like a huge blow.

Still, both Newcastle and Guehi will go on. Missing out on players is simply part of the game.

Jamie Redknapp is impressed with how the player has reacted, too.

Jamie Redknapp likes what Marc Guehi has done since move to Newcastle broke down

Guehi had reportedly been keen to join Newcastle this summer but Redknapp is impressed with the defender’s conduct during the saga.

Speaking on Sky Sports News at 15:47 BST on 30/08/2024, Redknapp said: “If there’s a way to behave, I like the way that Guehi has done it. It’s not been easy for him he knows the amount of money that’s been offered would be life-changing.

“He’s got on with it, captained Palace and has been a proper professional. It will all come good for him. Palace may have said give us another year and we won’t stand in your way.”

Where Marc Guehi goes next after Newcastle move collapses

Guehi is thought to have been disappointed about the botched move to St James’ Park but Redknapp looks right in his appraisal of the player’s conduct.

The England international is believed to remain committed to the cause at Palace and will not let the matter impact his time at Selhurst Park.

That speaks to a pretty admirable character, further underlining why Newcastle were seemingly so keen to sign him this summer.

Hopefully, missing out on his services – at least for now – doesn’t come back to bite Newcastle in the years to come.
