Toon transfer target Tyler Adams explains what he loves about Newcastle

Newcastle United might have an ace up their sleeve if they formalise their interest in Tyler Adams.

The Leeds United midfielder looks likely to leave Elland Road following relegation, and has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

He wants to be back in the Premier League next season, and caught Newcastle’s attention late last year.

Adams has played at St James’ Park once during his career – that was the 0-0 draw between the Magpies and Leeds on New Year’s Eve last season. The USA international was particularly brilliant on that day, and impressed Toon officials with his performance.

That has led to interest in the £20million man, but he remains a Leeds player at this moment in time.

But with Newcastle keen to sign another midfielder, Adams could be an astute option. And his latest comments about the Magpies suggest that he might be keen on the move if the opportunity arises.

Tyler Adams impressed by ‘bumping’ St James’ Park

Adams has appeared on the latest episode of the New York Red Bulls’ podcast, and was asked to name the favourite place he played at last season.

“Favourite place…Newcastle was bumping this year,” he said.

“They’re doing things the right way and I think they have the recognition now of ‘jeez our team is good and Champions League is in our sights’.

“They came out and there was a full display. The fans were crazy, that was probably the loudest. It’s never ending [the crowd], you look up and it’s just black. The fans keep going and you’re staring into an abyss.”

Chance is there for Newcastle

Adams was blown away by the Newcastle supporters, on a day when he was the villain. He stood up to Eddie Howe’s players and riled up the crowd, refusing to cave under the cauldron of noise that was engulfing him.

However, it would be completely different if Adams was wearing a black and white shirt, and he proved that day that he has what it takes to be successful on Tyneside. But that will not happen unless Newcastle make a move this summer.

That might all depend on how the rest of Newcastle’s transfer business goes. Howe has multiple positions he wants to fill, including in the middle of the park. However, the arrival of Sandro Tonali surely means that a second centre midfielder is not a priority.

Instead, Howe wants defensive reinforcements, as well as a winger. Harvey Barnes is the leading candidate to fill that role.

But by the time Newcastle revisit their midfielder search, they could do a lot worse than Adams. He is someone who already appreciates the Toon Army, and might relish the chance to play at St James’ Park every other week.
