The real reason why Jorgen Strand Larsen was so eager to join Newcastle United, it’s surprising

Newcastle made multiple attempts to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves during the summer transfer window, but ultimately failed in their efforts.

It was a very long and drawn-out summer for the Magpies, with several players rejecting moves to Tyneside.

However, Eddie Howe got the players he was keen on signing eventually, with six senior players joining Newcastle United, including new record signing Nick Woltemade.

Yoane Wissa also joined Newcastle, but it could have easily been Jorgen Strand Larsen making the move to the North East had any of the Magpies’ bids been rejected before the deadline.

Richard Keys said Strand Larsen was seriously considering the Newcastle move, with other reports saying that the Norwegian international had already asked to leave Wolves. With the player staying at Molineux, a new report has shared the real reason why he wanted to leave.

Jorgen Strand Larsen wanted a big move to Newcastle United before he got too old

Strand Larsen missed Wolves’ trip to St James’ Park on Saturday, which saw Woltemade score a brilliant header to secure Newcastle’s first win of the season.

The striker is currently out with an Achilles injury, which forced him out of the game against Everton and international duty with Norway.

Perhaps he is still reeling from the move to Newcastle breaking down, as according to Chris Waugh of The Athletic, Strand Larsen was pushing for the move away to ensure he got a big move before it is too late.

Strand Larsen is only 25 and does not turn 26 until February, but the feeling from insiders is that he realised that if the move did not come to fruition in the summer, it may never come around again. Additionally, it was a case of Wissa or Strand Larsen in the final weeks of the window. Even though some will argue they overpaid, Newcastle opted for Wissa.

Whether Newcastle United will try to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen in January

While the summer transfer window ended just a few weeks ago, the January window will be open in less than four months!

The 2025/26 season is a very busy one for Newcastle, so Howe could dip his toes back into the transfer market to see if there are any quality players available to help get his squad over the line.

One thing that appears certain, however, is that Strand Larsen is not a player that Newcastle will pursue in January.

From the same Athletic report, Waugh states that it is unlikely that Newcastle will go back in for the striker in January, barring any significant injuries to Wissa or Woltemade. Additionally, even if William Osula leaves, the feeling is that a younger forward will be signed.

Strand Larsen had his chance to join the Magpies, and while he was very keen, his current club were not. Perhaps one day the deal will be explored again, but for now Strand Larsen looks to be one that got away.
