Yoane Wissa has spoken for the first time as a Newcastle United player.

On a dramatic deadline day, Newcastle United confirmed the signing of Wissa from Brentford.

Newcastle are understood to have paid around £55million for Wissa, who will wear the club’s iconic number nine shirt.

Wissa was desperate to join Newcastle and finally got his wish with only a short time left in the transfer window.

Now, the forward has spoken as a Toon player for the first time.

Yoane Wissa’s first Newcastle United statement

The DR Congo international was speaking to Newcastle United’s official website.

He revealed: “I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

“I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”

Wissa will hope to make his debut when Newcastle host Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday 13 September, 2025.

He will return to former club Brentford when Eddie Howe’s side travel down to west London on Saturday 8 November.

According to Keith Downie, Newcastle beat the deadline with only 30 seconds remaining…

The games Yoane Wissa is set to miss for Newcastle United

Signing Wissa is a positive. He scored 19 Premier League goals last season and looks ready to hit the ground running.

His arrival also takes the pressure off of Nick Woltemade. Newcastle smashed their transfer record to sign Woltemade and there is excitement about the player, but he remains relatively untested.

Still, the German will need to step up towards the end of December. Wissa is almost certain to head to the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo later this year.

The tournament begins on Sunday 21 December, 2025. The group stages run until Wednesday 31 December, 2025.

That means Wissa will miss some of Newcastle’s festive fixture schedule. Should DR Congo progress all the way to the final, he won’t be back on Tyneside before Sunday 18 January, 2026.

That will be a blow to Newcastle and it’s hardly ideal they’ll only have Woltemade to rely on during an intensely busy period of the season.

However, overall, Wissa must surely be considered a good signing for the club.
