Report: Chelsea have just beaten Newcastle to £15m signing

Newcastle United are set to miss out on another Brazilian wonderkid to Chelsea.

The first was Andrey Santos in January. There was confidence that the midfielder was going to join the Magpies, only for Chelsea to swoop in and secure his signature for £18million.

That was a major blow, as Santos looks like a real star of the future. Quickly after joining the Blues, he showed what he was all about at the South American Youth Championship.

Newcastle missed out, at a time when Dan Ashworth is looking to bring in more talented teenagers who can develop into future stars on Tyneside.

Santos was not the only Brazilian youngster who Newcastle had their eye on, but now another Toon target from South America appears to be on his way to Chelsea.

Chelsea agree deal to sign Angelo Gabriel

Newcastle United have been tracking Santos youngster Angelo Gabriel since last summer. Head of recruitment Steve Nickson even travelled to Brazil to watch him play.

There was talk of a bid last year with a view to a move in 2023, but that was seemingly not forthcoming.

Rumours involving the 18-year-old forward joining Newcastle have continued, but it now looks like he is going to sign for Chelsea.

According to the Daily Mail, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have agreed a £15million deal to sign Angelo from Santos. The report adds that the wonderkid is expected to immediately join Strasbourg on loan – a club in France that the Chelsea owners have just purchased.

For the second time in six months, Newcastle are going to miss out on a star of the future to Chelsea. While in the short-term this is not a real issue, it is disappointing in the long-run.

As Newcastle progress up the footballing ladder, players will become more and more expensive. That is why you need a talented pool of youngsters who can rise through the ranks.

Dan Ashworth has already brought in the likes of Garang Kuol and Yankuba Minteh, but Santos and now Angelo will feel like two talents who got away – especially if they are starring in the Premier League in the coming years.
