After failing to secure a move to Newcastle United in the summer, Federico Chiesa is once again on the Magpies’ radar heading into January.

Following the summer arrival of Sandro Tonali, it looked like Newcastle were keen to add another Italian to their ranks. There was speculation that Chiesa was a target, with Eddie Howe keen to do a deal with Juventus.

Big money bids were reported, but the rumours went nowhere. In fact, the rumours never really made it out of Italy.

While there was plenty of speculation, talk of Newcastle wanting to sign Federico Chiesa felt wide of the mark. Instead, it was more likely that Chiesa wanted a move away and Newcastle was seen as a suitable destination following their qualification for the Champions League.

In the end, Chiesa stayed put, and there have since been claims that he could sign a new contract with Juventus.

Now January is looming, and the Italian press are once again talking about Chiesa possibly leaving Juve and heading to Tyneside.

Federico Chiesa could earn more money at Newcastle

According to Sport Mediaset, Chiesa wants a pay rise at Juventus, with his contract due to expire in 2025.

They claim that Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham are all interested in Chiesa, adding that a move to the Premier League would definitely result in Chiesa receiving a pay rise.

His current Juventus contract reportedly sees him earn £154,000-a-week.

The report appears to insinuate that Juve need to be quick and give Chiesa the pay rise that he wants, otherwise a club like Newcastle will swoop in and bow down to his demands.

While Chiesa would be an outstanding signing for Newcastle, it feels like the Magpies and the other two Premier League sides are simply being used by the media in this instance.

It would have been a huge surprise to see Chiesa join Newcastle in the summer, and it would be even more surprising if he arrives in January. This once again feels like a baseless story from the Italian media.
