Newcastle United signed one Italy international during the summer transfer window, but they were linked with bringing in a second.

The Magpies turned their attention to Serie A after qualifying for the Champions League, as Eddie Howe looked to majorly strengthen his squad.

After a failed move for Nicolo Barella, Newcastle quickly shifted their focus and brought in Sandro Tonali. He cost £55million, becoming the club’s second most expensive signing ever.

That deal is under a lot of scrutiny right now following the 23-year-old’s ban. He will not play for Newcastle again until August 2024 after being investigated for betting by the Italian Football Federation.

But after Tonali’s arrival, that was not the end of Newcastle’s interest in the Italian market. They then looked for an attacker, and registered their interest in Federico Chiesa.

The Juventus forward had played with Tonali at international level, and sounded like he would be a good addition, and someone who would help Tonali settle into life on Tyneside. There was even talk of a £43million bid for Chiesa, as PIF looked to break the bank yet again on an Italian.

However, a move did not come to fruition. Chiesa was offered to Premier League clubs as he went in search of Champions League football, but he was instead forced to remain at Juventus.

Newcastle did not come to his rescue, and now the 26-year-old appears to have a new plan following a disappointing summer transfer window.

Federico Chiesa set for Juventus talks after missing out on Newcastle move

According to TEAMtalk, Chiesa is now set for talks with Juventus regarding his future with the club. They state that the winger is now leaning towards remaining with the Serie A giants, where his current contract runs until 2025.

Despite being heavily linked with a move away during the summer, Chiesa is proving to be a key player for Juventus in the 2023/24 campaign. They have played 10 games so far, and are currently second in the table, two points behind leaders Inter Milan.

Chiesa has played an important role in their success, scoring four goals and providing one assist in nine appearances.

It looks like Newcastle’s chance to sign Chiesa has been and gone. If it was going to happen, it had to be in the summer.

It is a shame, as he would have been an excellent addition to Eddie Howe’s side. His versatility would have been pivotal, as he can play anywhere across the forward line.

He is exactly the type of player that Howe needs right now given Newcastle’s injury crisis, but it appears that his future remains in Italy.
