Paul Mitchell wants to go out at Newcastle United with a bang.

It has been announced that Paul Mitchell is leaving Newcastle United, with the 43-year-old’s duties on Tyneside set to be over at the end of June.

Newcastle have started to look for a replacement, but will be in no rush to appoint a new sporting director.

That is because Newcastle’s summer transfer plans will not change, with the Magpies’ top targets already identified.

Paul Mitchell aims to make Newcastle United signing

It has been reported that Eddie Howe wants four signings, and there is a desire to get at least one deal done in the very near future.

That is according to the Telegraph, who report that Paul Mitchell is ‘determined’ to make a key signing for Newcastle United before his reign as sporting director comes to an end.

That is something that Mitchell is yet to do since arriving at St James’ Park.

In the summer of 2024, Mitchell failed to sign Marc Guehi. In January 2025, Newcastle almost signed Abdukodir Khusanov, but Mitchell could not finalise a deal.

The former Monaco chief will hope to make up for lost time, with the Telegraph adding that Newcastle United are ready to move for Bryan Mbeumo and launch a fresh approach for Guehi.

Eddie Howe hopes for early transfers at Newcastle United

Mitchell’s desire to make a major signing before he leaves will delight Howe, who has made it very clear that the Magpies need to move swiftly this summer.

Before Sunday’s game against Everton, Howe said Newcastle need to ‘act quickly’ in the transfer market.

“My mindset is always the same when you come to this time of year,” he said.

“You want to act quickly because usually the best available options will move quite quickly.

“If you’re too late to react, you can miss out on potential transfers that could make the difference.”

The sooner players arrive, the sooner they can be integrated into the Newcastle United squad. The sooner that happens, the sooner they can have a positive impact for Howe’s team.

With Howe and Mitchell eager for swift progress in the transfer market, it could be a very interesting few weeks on Tyneside.
