Newcastle United are once again looking for a new sporting director following Paul Mitchell’s departure.

It was announced on Tuesday that Paul Mitchell is leaving Newcastle United, with the 43-year-old set to walk away at the end of June by mutual consent.

The announcement has shocked Newcastle United fans, who are eager to discover who will arrive as Paul Mitchell’s replacement.

Some Newcastle fans want Steve Nickson to get the job. He is currently the club’s head of recruitment, but was suggested as a possible sporting director candidate by Amanda Staveley last summer.

Newcastle United begin search for new sporting director

While Nickson is someone who could replace Mitchell at Newcastle United, a decision regarding the next Toon sporting director is not on the immediate horizon.

That is according to the Telegraph, who claim that Newcastle United have started the process of identifying Mitchell’s successor at St James’ Park.

However, the Telegraph add that appointing a replacement is not imminent.

Eddie Howe’s role in finding Paul Mitchell’s successor

It has been reported that Eddie Howe almost left Newcastle United last summer following Mitchell’s arrival.

The Toon boss saw his recruitment power diminish, while he was not involved in the process to bring Mitchell to Tyneside. In fact, he only found out about Mitchell’s looming arrival 24 hours before the Newcastle United fans.

However, the search for Mitchell’s replacement will be different.

The Telegraph state that Eddie Howe will be involved in hiring Newcastle United’s next sporting director, with Andy Howe and Steve Nickson also set to play a part in the process.

The latter will likely welcome the news that Mitchell is moving on at the end of the season.

It was reported in September 2024 that Nickson was frustrated at Newcastle United, with his role diminished by Mitchell’s appointment as sporting director.
