Paul Mitchell already has ideas on the kind of players he wants to sell at Newcastle

Paul Mitchell has an awful lot to do at Newcastle United this summer.

Mitchell has only just arrived at Newcastle as the club’s new sporting director, in the midst of a transfer window in which Eddie Howe is eager to sign both a new central defender and a right-winger.

Given the slow nature of the summer transfer window thus far, it’s clearly not an easy process.

The former Southampton, Tottenham and Monaco chief is settling in and also must build a relationship with Howe, who has spoken positively about him.

Selling players is equally as important, too.

Indeed, owners PIF were reportedly unhappy with the frenzied nature of the club’s dealings in June, with Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh sold against Howe’s desire.

That was needed to avoid a ten-point deduction for breaking PSR rules, but obviously isn’t ideal.

Newcastle have struggled to shift players on for a while now, with the frustration on that present even during Dan Ashworth’s brief time at St James’ Park.

Mitchell, however, is seemingly hatching a plan.

Who Paul Mitchell wants to sell at Newcastle United

According to The Athletic, Mitchell is keen to move senior players on in order to reduce the squad’s average age.

Interestingly, Transfermarkt data notes that the average age in the squad is currently 26.9 years.

Newcastle are struggling to sell older players

Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson are both over 30 but the club are seemingly struggling to shift them, with finding buyers for Premier League players rather difficult given the sums involved.

Still, they may have hope when it comes to selling another of the more senior players.

Kieran Trippier, after all, is said to be attracting interest from Saudi Arabia and would be allowed to leave Newcastle should he look to pursue a new challenge at this stage of his career.
