Newcastle United wonderkid denied summer exit, he wanted to go on loan

Newcastle United loaned out multiple youngsters this summer, but one Toon talent was denied a move away from St James’ Park.

After arriving on a free transfer from Malaga, Newcastle loaned Antonio Cordero out to Belgian side KVC Westerlo.

Elsewhere, Travis Hernes joined Groningen and Trevan Sanusi signed for Lorient. Both players will spend the duration of the 2025/26 season away from St James’ Park, with Hernes’ deal potentially becoming permanent next summer.

But while they were all given the opportunity to temporarily play their football away from Newcastle United, it was a different story for Lewis Miley.

Lewis Miley wanted to leave Newcastle United on loan

That is according to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Miley wanted to leave Newcastle United on loan during the summer transfer window.

However, the Magpies would not sanction his departure.

“Ipswich were interested in signing him on loan,” Bailey said.

“It’s not that he wanted to leave permanently, but he was looking for first-team football somewhere. It’s going to be hard to get that at Newcastle with the current trio that Eddie Howe has.

“He was looking for a loan move.”

Newcastle United made the right decision to keep Lewis Miley

Given the amount of football he played during the 2023/24 season and the hype surrounding him, it is understandable that Miley wants to get out there and play regularly.

However, Eddie Howe is right to keep Miley at St James’ Park. While he is not in the starting lineup right now, there will be plenty of opportunities for him to play this season.

Miley is Sandro Tonali’s main understudy for the number six position, while the 19-year-old will benefit more from training alongside the likes of the Italy international and Bruno Guimaraes than going out on loan.

Had Newcastle signed another centre-midfielder, perhaps the Toon wonderkid could have been allowed to leave. Alas, that did not happen and Miley remains on Tyneside.
