The 2025 summer transfer window is closed, but Newcastle United are already making plans for the future.
It has been a dramatic few months on Tyneside, with Newcastle making six senior signings. Nick Woltemade was the biggest, becoming Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever at £69million.
Going out, Newcastle finally sold Alexander Isak. There were also permanent departures for Sean Longstaff and Martin Dubravka.
In terms of loans, Trevan Sanusi signed for Lorient. Elsewhere, Travis Hernes joined Groningen.
The hope is that both players will blossom away from St James’ Park, but there is a chance that one of them might not actually return to Tyneside.

Travis Hernes could leave Newcastle United permanently
It was announced on Tuesday night that Groningen have signed Travis Hernes on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season.
It is a good move for the 19-year-old midfielder, who spent the entirety of pre-season working with the Newcastle United first-team squad.
Eddie Howe put his trust in Hernes, but it may not result in him emerging as a senior star in black and white.
That is because Groningen have confirmed that they have an option to buy Hernes permanently next summer.
As part of their announcement, they wrote: “FC Groningen has signed a loan deal with midfielder Travis Hernes from Newcastle United. The 19-year-old Norwegian will finish the current season at Euroborg. The Pride of the North has included a purchase option in the loan agreement to permanently acquire the youth international after the season.”
Groningen also confirmed when they found out they could sign Hernes, adding: “Only last weekend did it become clear that the midfielder would be allowed to go on loan from his club.”
How much did Newcastle United pay for Travis Hernes?
Hernes joined Newcastle United from Shrewsbury Town in September 2023. By 2026, he may no longer be a Newcastle United player.
Groningen have the option to buy him permanently. Whether they take up that option will largely depend on how he performs in the Eredivisie.
It is an opportunity for Newcastle to make a profit, although how much is unclear.
When Newcastle bought Hernes, the fee they paid was undisclosed.
Regardless of whatever fee they might receive from Groningen, the Magpies will not get all of it. That is because Shrewsbury Town included a 20% sell-on clause as part of his move to the North East two years ago.
