Newcastle United told new stance on Marc Guehi as Crystal Palace boss speaks out

Much has been made about Newcastle United’s interest in Marc Guehi.

Newcastle were keen to sign Guehi last summer but Crystal Palace stood firm on the England defender.

Indeed, Newcastle saw a series of offers rejected for Guehi, with chairman Steve Parish confirming Palace were looking for “superstar money”.

Such is the level of interest in the former Chelsea defender, the 24-year-old is in demand. Tottenham tried to sign Guehi during the January transfer window but, like Newcastle in the summer, they were rebuffed.

Still, perhaps Eagles boss Oliver Glasner has hinted at a fresh development. While Palace weren’t eager to sell before the season started, recent comments from the Austrian hint at something of a shift.

Crystal Palace hint they would sell Marc Guehi if they could find replacement

Newcastle retain an interest in Guehi, which certainly makes sense given the extents to which the club went to sign him last summer.

While it remains to be seen if the club revisit the deal this summer where rival interest could further muddy the waters, the Palace boss hinted the major reason why Guehi wasn’t sold in January was because the Eagles just couldn’t find a replacement in time.

That could well hint at a slight softening of their stance, considering how much they insisted Guehi would remain at Selhurst Park last summer if their valuation was not met.

“It was clear in our situation that we can’t sell a player on deadline day because we don’t find a replacement within a few hours,” he said at Friday’s pre-match press conference.

“It’s just impossible.

“Credit to the chairman, I think they were not really negotiations. He explained to them pretty soon that there is no chance because of our situation, and it is always Crystal Palace has to be number one in all the considerations.

“Then it was clear, we can’t sell Marc because we don’t get a replacement.”

Marc Guehi would have huge wage demands at Newcastle United

Guehi would expect to become Newcastle’s highest earner, were he to move to the club at some point.

The defender would reportedly demand up to £170k-per-week, which would take him above Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle’s highest-paid player.

With that in mind, moving him for this summer would be a huge commitment. While not to doubt his quality, how would the club’s current top players react to someone coming in on more money than them?

It’s a huge decision to make.
