Newcastle United are planning to sign a goalkeeper this summer.

That is one of the Magpies’ priorities, with Newcastle targeting at least three signings.

The plan will be to bring in a goalkeeper who can be Nick Pope’s long-term replacement at St James’ Park, after failing to do so in 2024.

Newcastle United were linked with the likes of Giorgi Mamardashvili, Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford last year, but ended up signing Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest for PSR reasons. He has played just 45 minutes for the club since his £20million arrival.

Whether Newcastle United are close to signing Joan Garcia

As the summer transfer window looms, more players begin to be linked with moves to St James’ Park.

There were even suggestions in Spain that Newcastle were close to solving their goalkeeper problem, with reports claiming that Espanyol’s Joan Garcia was on the verge of signing for Eddie Howe’s side for £21million.

However, that story is wide of the mark according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh.

As part of a Q&A for the Athletic, Waugh stated that talk of Garcia closing in on a move to Tyneside has been ‘played down by sources who stress no incoming transfer deals are yet concluded’.

James Trafford named as Newcastle United’s top target

As well as disputing the Garcia claims, Waugh has noted who the Magpies’ top goalkeeping target currently is.

The journalist claims that the honour currently belongs to James Trafford.

Trafford has been celebrating promotion to the Premier League with Burnley, but speculation over his future continues.

He has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park for almost a full year, while it has been claimed that Trafford still wants to join Newcastle.

The 22-year-old has garnered a lot of attention for his heroics in the Championship, and he is certainly not shy of confidence. Trafford has called himself ‘world class’, and would no doubt back himself to be a star at Newcastle United.
