Newcastle United could have a new goalkeeper for the start of next season.
While Nick Pope has broadly been a fine signing for Newcastle United, the idea that the club could move for a new goalkeeper has long been discussed – and James Trafford’s name has frequently come up.
Trafford has described himself as “world class”, having enjoyed a remarkable campaign as Burnley sealed a quick-fire return to the Premier League under former Toon star Scott Parker.
Newcastle have agreed personal terms with Trafford but it was unclear as to whether or not the fact the Clarets had won promotion had complicated matters.
Craig Hope, however, has provided more insight.

James Trafford wants to join Newcastle United
Manchester United are also interested in Trafford, who has returned to form after initially struggling for the Clarets in the Premier League last season.
Still, Newcastle fans have been told to watch Trafford closely ahead of the summer transfer window and Hope has now revealed that the 22-year-old is keen to join Newcastle this summer, having come close to a move to St James’ Park before the start of last season.

The Daily Mail reporter told a YouTube video: “James Trafford is one I think Newcastle will absolutely try to do.
“Now Burnley’s promotion in terms of affecting the asking the price, let’s wait and see on that.
He added: “I know James Trafford is a player they’ve identified. In very nearly happened this [2024] summer – the player himself is really keen on it.”
Anthony Gordon has already told Newcastle United fans what to expect from James Trafford
The Clarets ‘keeper has been in fantastic form this season, there is little doubt about that. Admittedly with the caveat that he’s not playing amongst the truly elite, no one in the Championship boasts a better record than Trafford this season.

Newcastle star Anthony Gordon has played with the former Manchester City youngster at England U21 level, too.
Together for that age group, the duo won the U21 Euros in the summer of 2023, after which the winger returned to Newcastle a completely different player.
Gordon described Trafford as “outstanding” and, on current form, it’s difficult to disagree with that.
