Newcastle United are prepared to flex their financial muscle and compete with European giants for signings this summer.

Through patience and off-field growth, Newcastle United have relaxed their issues when it comes to the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Newcastle will bank a £73m PSR boost this summer which will provide sporting director Paul Mitchell with a sizeable transfer budget to improve Eddie Howe’s squad.

Reports claim Mitchell wants three major signings at Newcastle this summer, with one of those being a new centre-forward.

With Callum Wilson’s future uncertain, Newcastle want a new back-up option who can challenge Alexander Isak.

Newcastle United showing interest in Vangelis Pavlidis

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Newcastle United are one of four sides competing for the signature of Vangelis Pavlidis.

The 26-year-old Benfica striker has been in incredible form this season, scoring 24 goals in 46 matches across all competitions. He has scored 17 in his last 17.

Spanish giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also showing an interest, as are Premier League rivals Chelsea.

It is understood that Pavlidis has a £86m (100m Euros) release clause in his contract, but Benfica would be willing to sell for well under that figure given their ongoing financial struggles.

To give Newcastle fans a glimpse at Pavlidis’ ability, he was nominated for the Puskas award in 2021 after a stunning solo effort.

Newcastle could target double Benfica raid

Benfica have grown a reputation as a club who often produce world-class talent with the likes of Ruben Diaz, Joao Felix, Ederson and Enzo Fernandez all making their name at the Portuguese club.

As they have done so often in the past, they will have to sell this summer and Pavlidis is just one of several stars who could be shown the exit.

Along with the Greek striker, Newcastle have been linked with Antonio Silva, who is viewed as an extremely promising centre-back talent.

Benfica valued Silva at £41m over the January window when Newcastle were heavily linked with a move – that valuation could continue to drop as his contract ticks down.

Newcastle want a centre-back and striker to arrive in the summer, and Mitchell could secure both signings from Benfica if he moves quickly.
