Newcastle United are unlikely to do any transfer business in January, despite boosting their PSR position.

With Miguel Almiron saying his goodbyes, there will soon be a PSR boost at Newcastle United. However, the Magpies will not feel the benefit until the summer.

It is claimed that Newcastle are unlikely to sign anyone this month, as a frustrating transfer window enters its final week.

It had previously been suggested that Newcastle could bring in a project player – a young prospect who would be viewed as one for the future. However, that now seems unlikely too.

All the while, a project player who Newcastle United scouts looked at is on the brink of a transfer.

Geordie Boot Boys were told last year that Newcastle officials had watched Bazoumana Toure. The 18-year-old winger was attracting a lot of attention, with Newcastle one of the clubs to cast their eye over an Ivorian attacker who has made a real impression at Hammarby in Sweden.

Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt recently reported that Newcastle have been interested in Toure, with Tottenham Hotspur also named as a suitor. However, both Newcastle and Spurs are going to miss out.

According to Sportbladet, Bundesliga side Hoffenheim have informed Hammarby that they are willing to pay around £12million to sign Toure. It would be the most expensive transfer in the history of the Allsvenskan, which is the top flight of Swedish football.

Sportbladet add that final negotiations are now taking place, with a deal close to being finalised.

Toure the type of project player Newcastle could have signed

With a deal close to completion, it will be interesting to see how Toure’s career develops in Germany.

Hoffenheim are on course to sign an exciting talent, and will no doubt make a huge profit on the teenager if he goes on to achieve his potential.

For Newcastle, it could end up feeling like a missed opportunity. He is a left-footed winger capable of operating on both flanks, at a time when Newcastle are looking for reinforcements out wide.

Paul Mitchell needs to start signing players like Toure before they truly burst into life and become more expensive. While there must be a reason why Newcastle United have not pursued Toure more intently, it will hopefully not prove to be an opportunity that the Magpies live to regret.
