Both Newcastle United are keeping tabs on an Inter Milan star who only left his previous club in the summer.

The Magpies aren’t prioritising a midfielder in the January transfer window – Toon boss Eddie Howe is happy with how his squad are shaping up in the middle at the moment.

Newcastle’s win at Manchester United proved that Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali are working well in the middle of the park with Joelinton also improving after a slow start to the season.

The main goal for Toon sporting director Paul Mitchell is to sign a striker, winger and goalkeeper in January but it won’t be an easy task with PSR a lingering issue at the club.

Newcastle must sell before they can buy, exits look likely with Martin Dubravka and Miguel Almiron reportedly close to moves abroad.

Now, a recent transfer update suggests how the Magpies could spend their money if sales are made.

Newcastle eyeing move for Davide Frattesi

Newcastle have toyed with the prospect of selling Guimaraes to fund PSR. In the new contract, which he signed in 2023 a £100million release clause was included but wasn’t triggered.

The 27-year-old has since become club captain and has talked about how much he loves being a part of the club and the city.

According to TEAMTalk, Newcastle would enter talks for Frattesi, who only signed for Inter on a permanent deal in the summer, if Guimaraes were to leave.

Manchester City was interested in the Brazilian over the summer – they were willing to offer around £70m for Guimaraes, which Newcastle deemed too low.

The report states that Frattesi would cost clubs around £41.5m despite a lack of game time this season.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle’s opponents on Saturday are also believed to have enquired about the 25-year-old’s situation.

Despite rumours of an exit, Inter are keen to keep the Italian at the club until the conclusion of the Club World Cup this summer at least.

Davide Frattesi compared to Bruno Guimaraes

Frattesi has struggled for game time this season despite making only just making a move from fellow Serie A side Roma in the summer after an initial loan the season before.

However, in his short amount of minutes, the Italian has scored more goals than Guimaraes who has made five more appearances and played over 1,000 more minutes.

Like Guimaraes, Frattesi loves the ball at his feet despite making significantly fewer passes per 90 than the Brazilian. Unlike Guimaraes, Frattesi often drifts wide to provide support for Milan’s right-wingers during attacks.

Frattesi doesn’t get too stuck in defensively, however, something Howe must consider if he were to sign him.
