Newcastle United know they could soon spark the biggest transfer battle in football’s ‘modern history’

Newcastle United have some brilliant players on the books.

At times this season, the quality in the Newcastle United ranks hasn’t been on show consistently enough.

Indeed, what’s so frustrating is that Eddie Howe has some absolutely fantastic players at his disposal but actually getting them to perform week in, week out has proven difficult.

Alexander Isak, however, is not one of them. The Sweden star has been brilliant since an injury-plagued start to the season, scoring 22 times in 31 games across all competitions.

As such, Isak has been hailed as “world class” and an awful lot has been made about his future.

Though under contract until the summer of 2028, he has been constantly linked with a move away.

Liverpool are interested in Isak, while all of Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona have previously been touted as potential landing spots.

Newcastle do not want to sell Isak but some more insight into their thinking has recently emerged.

Newcastle United know they could break records with Alexander Isak transfer battle

There is no suggestion the club want to sell what is surely their best player. Quite the opposite in fact, as Newcastle want to keep Isak.

However, there have been claims that Newcastle value Isak at £150million, which would make him one of the most expensive players of all time.

Such is the level of interest in the player, Miguel Delaney of The Independent has offered an interesting update.

Writing in his Reading The Game newsletter, Delaney reveals that Newcastle sources know they could spark the biggest auction in football’s “modern history” if they were to indicate they are prepared to sell.

“The club also know that, should they actually become open to offers, it could spark one of the biggest auctions in the modern game’s history,” he wrote.

Delaney also adds that Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are already looking at ways they could form an attractive offer.

Alexander Isak could get bumper new contract at Newcastle United

Receiving £150million for any player has its obvious benefits. With that kind of money, a lot of investment could go back into the squad.

Very few players have ever moved clubs for that much money – with only Kylian Mbappe and Neymar having done so.

Still, quite how Newcastle would replace Isak is unclear, even with that kind of money in their pockets. He is an absolutely brilliant striker, capable of anything on his day.

Clearly, reading about so much interest in him comes with the territory of having a player that good. That is simply part of football.

However, is it so hard to imagine Isak staying long-term? He has given little outward indication that he wants to leave and the club boast some very ambitious owners.

Newcastle could afford to give Isak a new contract, particularly after announcing an increase in their revenue.

It’s hard to make a case for selling him, even if a transfer fee breaks records.
