Newcastle United ‘keeping tabs’ on striker who ruthlessly snubbed Rafa Benitez in 2017

Newcastle United are keeping their eye out for a striker in 2025.

The Magpies need attacking reinforcements, with Callum Wilson likely to leave Newcastle United when his contract expires.

While Newcastle United plan to keep Alexander Isak, they need to sign a striker who can act as cover.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with Newcastle, but there are no guarantees that he moves to St James’ Park at the end of the season.

Newcastle United aware of Tammy Abraham ahead of 2025 move

Calvert-Lewin is not the only striker on the Magpies’ radar, however.

That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle United are one of various Premier League clubs that are being kept informed about Tammy Abraham’s situation.

The 27-year-old is a Roma player, but is currently on loan at AC Milan. However, a summer move appears to beckon, with West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Everton and Leeds also keeping an eye on the England international.

“You would presume he [Abraham] would be a Callum Wilson replacement,” Bailey said.

“Newcastle United are aware of him and his situation. They are one of multiple clubs keeping tabs on his future.

“He ticks a lot of boxes. He would certainly fit the way that Eddie Howe plays, and he’s proven he can score goals in the Premier League in the past.

“I think he will end up back in England.”

Tammy Abraham’s failed move to Newcastle United in 2017

Newcastle United signed Joselu in the summer of 2017, but he was not Rafa Benitez’s first choice.

Following promotion back to the Premier League, Rafa Benitez wanted a striker to provide the goals that Newcastle United needed to survive in the top flight.

Joselu eventually moved to St James’ Park from Stoke City, after the Magpies had missed out on Tammy Abraham.

Newcastle wanted Abraham on loan from Chelsea, after he had scored 23 goals in the Championship for Bristol City.

His next move would be a Premier League loan, and Benitez wanted him to move to Tyneside.

However, the forward joined Swansea City instead. It was even claimed that Abraham was advised not to join Newcastle United because of the lively nightlife on Tyneside.

Following the move, Toon legend Micky Quinn criticised Abraham for choosing Swansea City ahead of Newcastle United.

“I have to say I am extremely disappointed in Tammy Abraham,” Quinn told the Chronicle in 2017.

‘It shouldn’t take me to tell him that Newcastle is a far bigger football club than Swansea.

“At St James’ Park there is a club on the up with a world class manager who can really go places if Rafa Benitez is backed.

“At the Liberty Stadium, you have a club who only just survived last season and will likely be battling relegation again next term.”
