Newcastle United are interested in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini this summer, but a high asking price could see them explore other targets.

Despite playing just eight Serie A games last season, the Magpies are very interested in the 21-year-old, who they believe still has a high ceiling.

Newcastle United have been informed that Giorgio Scalvini will cost around £52million this summer, a large transfer fee for someone who suffered two major injuries in the last 12 months.

It is believed Newcastle saw an opportunity to sign Scalvini for cheap due to his recent injury problems, but it now appears to be the complete opposite. Atalanta boss Ivan Juric wants to build a team around Scalvini, who is just about back to full fitness after missing the majority of the season with a shoulder injury.

Despite the price tag, Scalvini is open to joining Newcastle this summer after learning about their interest. It was also reported that Sandro Tonali gave Scalvini glowing reviews of the club and its staff.

While Scalvini remains a top target, a new report has linked the Magpies with a move for a defender who would cost significantly less than the Italian defender.

Newcastle United could sign Axel Disasi on a cut-price deal from Chelsea

Chelsea defender Axel Disasi joined the Blues from Monaco for £39m in 2024, having impressed in France. However, the 27-year-old had a tough start to life in England and quickly lost his place in Enzo Maresca’s starting XI.

Some fans may remember that Disasi had a shocking game against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup last year, scoring an own goal and looking shaky throughout.

Now, according to L’Equipe, Disasi has been told he can leave Chelsea this summer, and Newcastle are interested. The report states that the France international has been deemed surplus to requirements by Maresca, having spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa.

Villarreal are also interested in the defender, but the report suggests that Disasi would favour a move to a Premier League club rather than going abroad, so Newcastle will have the upper hand if they are to enter negotiations.

Additionally, Disasi will cost around €30m (£26m) this summer, much cheaper than Scalvini.

Eddie Howe told Newcastle United not to sign Axel Disasi in 2024

Disasi is clearly the cheaper option in comparison to Scalvini, but it appears Howe would rather make a move for the young Italian over the Frenchman.

In 2024, it was revealed that Howe actually told Newcastle chiefs not to sign Disasi, and was very against the idea of bringing the defender to Tyneside.

Last summer saw Newcastle place several bids for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, all of which were rejected. It appeared to be a case of Guehi or nothing for Howe, and he ended up getting the latter.

Newcastle do not seem to be in the race for Guehi this summer, so other targets are being assessed. While he may favour a move to Newcastle, Howe is clearly reluctant to bring Disasi to the club.
