Signing Tino Livramento in 2023 was a masterstroke by Newcastle United, and now they have the chance to pull off the same trick.

Tino Livramento has been outstanding since joining Newcastle United, proving to be well worth the £32million he cost from Southampton. His performances have attracted a lot of attention, with Manchester City interested in Livramento.

However, the 22-year-old is going nowhere, as the Magpies get set to continue benefitting from the gamble they took two years ago. Newcastle bought Livramento on the back of an ACL injury, which represented a massive risk.

While other clubs opted against buying Livramento because of his injury, Newcastle took the plunge and it paid off.

Newcastle United eye Giorgio Scalvini after injury-ridden season

In 2025, Newcastle United have the chance to do the same with Giorgio Scalvini.

The 21-year-old is a Newcastle transfer target, as Eddie Howe aims to bring in a new right-sided centre-back. Atalanta could be tempted to sell Scalvini for the right price, but his injury record could influence how much the Magpies are willing to spend.

The Italian defender endured a miserable 2024/25 season. He was out of action at the start of the campaign due to a torn ACL, while it ended with a shoulder problem. In total, Scalvini was only able to play eight times in all competitions for Atalanta.

There are two ways that Newcastle can look at Scalvini’s injury problems. On the one hand, they could use them to sign him at a low point in his career when his stock has dropped, as they did with Livramento. Alternatively, it could be decided that his fitness issues represent too big a risk.

How much Atalanta want for Giorgio Scalvini

It may simply come down to how much he will cost.

According to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Atalanta are looking to receive more than £40million for Scalvini.

“Newcastle like Scalvini a lot,” he told Geordie Boot Boys.

“But his injury record has been so bad. It is an issue and Atalanta want good money for him. Newcastle have kept in touch, but Atalanta did want over £40million. That is tough to do given his fitness problems.”

A fee of more than £40million would make Scalvini Newcastle’s most expensive defender ever. That honour currently belongs to Sven Botman, who cost £35million from Lille in 2022.
