Newcastle United remain interested in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi after failing in their attempts to sign him in 2024.

The Magpies are eager to sign a new centre-back this summer, with the current crop of players now approaching the latter stages of their careers.

The likes of Dan Burn have enjoyed the best seasons of their lives, but at 33, there will naturally be doubts over whether he can still play a full Premier League season with Champions League football sprinkled in there.

Newcastle United are in a situation where they are now looking to bolster their squad ahead of next season, having learned from their last time in the Champions League. An unprecedented number of injuries occurred, which led to Eddie Howe being forced to play youth players in big games against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

Newcastle have a long-term interest in Guehi and were desperate to sign him last summer. However, Crystal Palace rejected several of Newcastle’s offers for Guehi, some of which were up to £70m.

This summer looks to be a different story, and a new report has shared how much Newcastle genuinely think they can pay for Guehi in 2025.

Newcastle United confident of getting a cut-price deal for Marc Guehi

Newcastle fans think they should offer Joe Willock to Palace as a sweetener for Guehi. Reports recently surfaced that Willock was of interest to Palace, so it would make sense to put the two together in a deal.

Despite that, the Magpies are very keen on getting a cut-price deal for Guehi, who only has one year left on his deal. The 24-year-old may be difficult to prise away from the London-based club, however, as Palace’s FA Cup win guaranteed them a spot in the Europa League for next season, so he may want to stay at the club for another year before looking at his options.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle still see Guehi as a better option than other centre-backs who have been linked with moves in recent weeks.

Liverpool ace Jarell Quansah is believed to be of interest to Newcastle, but Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen look to have stolen a march with that deal.

The report adds that Newcastle think they can sign Guehi for just £40m this summer, a bargain in comparison to what they were bidding last year.

£40m for Marc Guehi would be considered a steal for Newcastle United

Having already won multiple caps with England and recently winning silverware, Guehi undoubtedly fits the bill for what Newcastle are looking for. They want players who know what it is like to play in big tournaments, in big games.

Guehi played in the finals of the 2024 European Championships; you could argue that it does not get much bigger than that. So, for Newcastle to now have a chance of signing Guehi for £40m is frankly baffling.

Newcastle would be signing a player who helps them with the home-grown quota in the Champions League and helped get Palace out of their rut at the start of the season. It seems like an absolute no-brainer for Newcastle to spend that much on Guehi.

With Fabian Schar being 33 years old with just a year left on his current deal, the pressure to sign his replacement will only become bigger the longer Newcastle leave it. The time to sign Guehi is now, and Howe must go all in to get the player he is clearly so desperate for.
